Alinda, located in the Karpuzlu district of Aydın Province, is one of the important cities of Caria. It can be reached via a 26 km road branching off at the 30th km of the Aydın–Muğla highway. Although there is limited information about Alinda, according to Strabo; Ada, the daughter of Hekatomnos, was expelled from Halicarnassus by her brother Pixodaros and retreated to Alinda in 340 BC, making this city her capital. Alinda was called Alexandria for a period. During this time, the city adopted Greek culture and maintained its importance in the Roman period, minting its own coins until the 3rd century AD. In the Byzantine period, Alinda became a bishopric center connected to the Metropolis of Aphrodisias. It was ruled by Ada, the daughter of Hekatomnos. The Ancient City of Alinda was settled by Ada, the daughter of Hekatomnos, after she was expelled from Halicarnassus by her brother Pixodaros in 340 BC. She handed over the city, where she was in exile, to Alexander but later took control of all Caria.
The city of Alinda is surrounded by walls. The fortification walls are made of local granite stone. These well-preserved walls are supported by towers in places. The aqueducts supplying water to the city are also partially preserved. The aqueduct west of the acropolis stands on four supports with round arches. The most important structure still standing today in Alinda is the Agora. The rectangular-planned structure has a market building on its southern side, with the upper floor arranged as a stoa. Extending in an east–west direction, the building is three stories high. The theatre is located on the southwestern slope of the acropolis. The Alinda theatre, built on a natural slope and facing southeast, has a well-preserved cavea (seating area). The stage building is completely destroyed, but the theatre reflects Hellenistic period characteristics. It continued to be used in the Roman period with additions. On the acropolis, there are two temple foundations whose plans can still be identified. Carian-type sarcophagi found among the houses of Karpuzlu indicate that the Alinda necropolis was concentrated on the southern slope of the city.
