It is the religious center of Caria. The Sanctuary of Lagina (Hecate) was one of the most important places of worship for the Carians, and its fame has survived to the present day; the area is also known as Leyne. Archaeological excavations carried out at the sanctuary are significant as they were among the first conducted by Turkish scholars. These excavations were led by Osman Hamdi Bey and Halit Ethem Bey.
